Nir Segal and Eloise Fornieles | There is a Light that Never Goes Out

January 31 - March 09, 2019

Eloise Fornieles

Curator: Leah Abir

Raw Art Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition, which is a collaboration between artists Nir Segal and Eloise Fornieles. Taken from The Smiths 1986 hit, the title of the show sets the premise for this new collaboration, which includes an installation and a series of actions and events.

In “There is a Light that Never Goes Out,” Segal and Fornieles seek to create and explore experiences of intimacy in transitory spaces.Throughout the duration of the show the power dynamics and the role of intimacy within social contracts are examined through objects, sets, and performative interactions such as slow dancing, karaoke duets, a ride in a car, a playlist, and a dance performance. Both Eloise and Nir’s practices employ intimacy as grounds for encounters with an audience. In their previous works, they have created platforms for people to engage with each other and share knowledge and experiences. In their current show, intimate personal stories are incorporated within shared collective experiences, proposing the consideration of intimacy within the establishment of relationships. The objects and sets in the exhibition are placed as invitations for encounters and vessels for emotionally charged histories.

One of the main events in the exhibition developed from a special invitation extended by the artists to Yossi Berg and Oded Graf Dance Theatre, who will be performing a new dance piece created specifically for the exhibition and for the conditions of an art gallery. This piece, titled “One Day Love Walked Into the Gallery,” features, as Berg and Graf write, “3 characters who are dancing to fill the gap between their inner worlds and the one outside, between who they were and who they are today, and between the way love is perceived and presented in culture and the way it is experienced by individuals.”

One of the transitory spaces the artists relate to in the show is that of the hotel room. During the exhibition they will place outside the Link Hotel & Hub in Tel Aviv a bench and a lamppost, which are twinned with a bench and lamp installed outside the gallery. The lamps’ lights are kept on throughout the entire duration of the exhibition in both venues. Alongside the Link Hotel & Hub installation, the Smith’s song “There is a Light that Never Goes Out”, which gave the exhibition its title, will be played daily at sunset at the hotel lounge.

Choreographers and Artistic Directors Yossi Berg and Oded Graf started collaborating in 2005, when they founded the international dance company Yossi Berg & Oded Graf Dance Theatre. They have since built a reputation for work that is supremely physical, sometimes provocative, and by turns poignant and witty. Having performed with world-renowned troupes, including Batsheva Dance Company and DV8 Physical Theatre, they mix a masterful physicality with a dynamic research of theatre, text, and voice. Responding to the social and political realities of contemporary life, they offer new ways of looking at dance and exploring performance.

Berg and Graf’s company is touring extensively in prestigious festivals and venues around the world: Montpellier Danse France, American Dance Festival, The Joyce Theater NYC, DansensHus Stockholm, SIDance South Korea, The Place Theater London, Lausanne Danse Switzerland, The Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and JCDN Japan, among others. They have created work for opera houses and won numerous choreography awards.
